Beckham comes back home.
David Beckham se va al Tottenham. Vuelve así al que hace ya más de veinte años pudo ser su primer club – antes, incluso de que se fuera al Manchester United. Su deseo de jugar – aunque no jugará al final en el Tottenham – en un nivel alto. Fácil hubiera sido quedarse parado. Por otro lado, su aparente falta de dedicación a los Galaxy, la ausencia de compromiso con el club que le paga $6.5m al año y la liga que le tenía como estandarte. No sorprende mucho que haya malestar con él. Cuando volvió de su primera cesión le atacaban los aficionados como un vendedor de humos; cuando volvió de la segunda cesión, lo hizo lesionado. Desde el punto de vista de los norteamericanos demostró que le importaba más sus otros equipos que no el que le pagaba. Ésta vez no le iban a dejar hacer lo mismo.
Beckham se fue hablando de su intención de ayudar al fútbol en los EEUU. Iba a cambiar el mundo, con el objetivo de conseguir lo que ni Pelé logró allí. Su legado iba a ser una liga de primer nivel, una América futbolística. Iba a hacerlo grande. Beckham siempre sabía que era complicado cambiarle la cara o el nivel del MLS. Sabía que no iba a ocurrir así de rápido. Pero habló de ello. Y se fue consciente de ello.
Lo que no se puede negar es que Beckham es un gran profesional. Lo que tampoco se puede negar es que cometió un error tan grande al irse a los Galaxy tan grande como su profesionalidad. En el momento en el que él se marchó todavía estaba en condiciones de haber sido importante para muchos clubes, pero el dinero y la influencia de su mujer le valieron más que sus ganas de jugar. Beckham se ha arrepentido de esto desde que se fue y lo hará hasta que se retire.
